Lily funeral flowers

When people think of funeral flowers, lilies are often one of the first flowers that come to mind. Elegant, fragrant and long-lasting, they create a stunning display and remain one of the most popular choices for coffin tributes.

Over the years I’ve heard many people say that lilies “mean death.” In truth, this is simply an old wives’ tale. Lilies have been used for centuries to symbolise peace, purity, hope and remembrance, which is why they are so often chosen to celebrate a loved one’s life.

Why We Love Using Lilies

At Kim-e-Fleurs we use premium Dutch lilies, renowned for their exceptional quality, strong stems and large blooms.

Whilst supermarket lilies are perfectly lovely for the home, professional florists use Dutch lilies because they produce a far more spectacular display and last exceptionally well.

Many premium Dutch lilies produce five or more flower heads per stem, creating a beautiful, full arrangement.

Lilies Aren’t Just White

Although white lilies are the most recognised funeral flower, they are available in a wonderful range of colours, including:

  • White
  • Cream
  • Pink
  • Yellow
  • Orange
  • Red

White lilies are traditionally associated with peace and remembrance, but many families now choose softer pinks, creams or vibrant colours to reflect the personality of their loved one.

Ordering Lily Funeral Tributes

One thing many people don’t realise is that fresh lilies are supplied in tight bud.

This is exactly how they should arrive because it means they are fresh and will continue opening over several days.

If you would like a coffin spray featuring fully open lilies, we always recommend allowing at least five days’ notice whenever possible. This gives the blooms time to develop into the spectacular display they are known for.

Excellent Value

Lilies create one of the largest visual displays of any flower, making them excellent value for funeral tributes.

Their large blooms fill arrangements beautifully, meaning they often provide an impressive display while remaining more affordable than many other premium flowers.

A Florist’s Tip

If you’ve ever noticed orange or brown powder on a lily, that’s the pollen from the stamens.

Professional florists carefully remove the stamens before creating funeral tributes because the pollen can stain both the petals and clothing.

If you have lilies at home, here’s a simple tip:

As soon as the flowers begin to open, gently remove the stamens while they are still firm and rubbery. It’s a quick job that helps keep the blooms looking beautiful. If left too long, the pollen becomes powdery and is much more likely to stain the petals or anything it touches.

Creating Beautiful Lily Funeral Tributes

Whether you choose a traditional white lily spray or a more colourful tribute, lilies remain one of the most elegant and meaningful flowers for saying goodbye.
